I just discovered an interesting project called "Add Your Own":
It's a wiki restaurant review system! They even have a rudimentary metadata system for locations and restaurant types. Is it worth us plugging the OG system to them?
One interesting thing their site does that ours doesn't is a summary view:
http://www.addyourown.com/neighborhood.php?nbh_id=13
I think this is a smart innovation. It would be nice to be able to do that for a given category - see a list of all the nodes, with selected metadata fields, in a tabular format. Maybe this is something I should have a go at, since it's long overdue that I contributed some more code.
Ha! Someone's already mentioned us to them! Fantastic.

OK, we need a major newspaper to give us a big plug! (Rather than just a mention in 'links of the week' ;) )

I'm not sure we're ready yet; the search needs to be yet more intuitive, I think, plus we need a better mechanism for fixing fuckups such as badly-named nodes. I think premature advertisement might be a bad thing and put people off. I am happy to be argued against, though.
(I'm talking here in terms of people using, rather than installing, the site - I'm aware that a better install procedure and working location stuff for non-UK cities are more important on that side, but I expect we're more likely to get users than operators from a newspaper article.)

Do we have anyone expert, confidant, whatever that believes they can get gps working on linux?

You don't need a PDA or GPS to contribute to OpenGuides. I've never used GPS. Earle showed me his device once and I nodded and smiled, yes, shiny thing. Not a clue how I'd use it.
Can someone give Jonathan a hand offlist, or suggest a suitable mailing list for him to get help on?

I am a complete newbie to this list, however my introduction was 2 of the developers, who 'insisted' that GPS location was central to their plans, it certainly is to ours: helping people with severe learning difficulties travel independently. They can't read.
So a howto setup GPS (on a linux pda) would seem to be very useful.
please email me on or off list. I suspect this may need a meeting, as my research indicates that support is currently minimal to alpha. linux is needed because commercial applications are not appropriate for our users, yet.
thanks

Looks like they could definitely benefit from our extra features.

Go for it; I would love to see your code. Want to come over this Sunday and hack?

Sure; what time? Mail me offlist.
addyourown.com has now branched out to London: http://www.addyourown.com/index.php?city_id=12&cat_id=1
Even that basic map is pretty useful.
