I sent this on before but it got lost in the list outage. Evan is currently on #openguides if anyone wants to stop by and talk.

Hey, folks. My name is Evan Prodromou, and I'm one of the two founders of Wikitravel.
http://www.wikitravel.org/ Wikitravel is a project to create a free (copyleft), complete, up-to-date and reliable world wide travel guide. It's a Wiki, like OpenGuides, so everything is edited and created and illustrated and such by users just drifting in off the Internet.
A friend pointed me to the OpenGuides site, and I have to say I like it. I think there's some overlap in what we're covering, but I'm not sure how much. You don't seem as similar as, say, CapitanCook.
Anyways, I wanted to say "hi". I don't know crappo about Oxford or Birmingham, so I don't think I have a lot to contribute, but I just figured I'd send a ping.
Good luck,
~ESP

Evan has just pointed me to this page on Wikitravel about their copyright policy:
http://www.wikitravel.org/article/Wikitravel:Why_Wikitravel_isn%27t_GFDL
I really think we can't afford to put this issue off any longer.
This follows on from my post back in August:

Well volunteered that man.
But seriously, I am completely uninterested in the copyright issue. I'm only posting to say that I trust Earle's judgement on copyright and licensing issues, so will be happy to go with whatever solution he comes up with - but I don't care that much, so I'm also happy to stick with the status quo, if no action ever comes of this talk.
So people who do care - speak up now! And then do something about it.

I was *this* ---> [ ] close to adding in the previous message "...and if I don't get any replies to this I am going to JFDI on London and let the other sites' administrators cope with it".

Unfortunately, the status quo just isn't good enough, for example because it means Wikitravel can't use material from us.

I am now looking to Attribution-ShareAlike license[0], much like Wikitravel. A side-effect of this is that we will not be able to include Wikipedia content[1], and so will need to replace/rewrite any that exists.
If there are no objections by the end of the day, I am going to begin the one month "grace period" (allowing material to be withdrawn due to objection to the licence) by tomorrow. One month after that (let's say on New Year's Day, for neatness) I will apply the license to cover all material on the Open Guide to London.
Implementation note: there are some places on the Guide where excerpted content occurs. Please, if you know of/discover any of these, ensure they comply with British law's[2] fair dealing statute[3][4] and mark them clearly.

[2] For the London Guide; modify as necessary if you decide to apply the same policy for a Guide in your country. [3] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_dealing#Fair_dealing_in_the_United_Kingdom [4] Although I have a sinking sensation that this may be obsolete given the recent application of the European Copyright Directive: http://www.opendemocracy.net/debates/article-8-40-510.jsp

I'll be following your progress closely, because I feel similarly uncomfortable with the state of limbo the content on the Oxford site currently exists in. If your application of the creative commons licence goes to plan I'll most likely follow suit.
Cheers,
Dominic.

Also done on the Birmingham and Manchester nodes as well.
dear all..
this same family of issues about to impact on several of our SPC sites.. I will be opting for Creative Commons for its ease of use and clarity of vision. This doesn't blow the issues away however and the absence of a license on recycled texts images etc.. will continue to complicate process.. once you step in, its all in..
easy
