FWIW, I think those guides where the navbar is included on the front
page (and not tucked away in a banner bar thing) are more prone to
looking cluttered than those where it isn't.

I'm not sure what I think about this. I guess as long as there's a link
to the recent changes page, it doesn't matter that much if this
information's missed out.
So, in effect, it would be "ten most recently
modified nodes" (or maybe
five?).
Out of interest, would it be hard to make it "N most recently modified
nodes", with N as a config option (and 5 or 10 as a sane default)? I
reckon the number that looks best will depend on the layout of a given
site's front page, and the number of changes worth showing will depend
(a bit, at least) on how frequently that site is updated.
