Hi! I'm planning on starting a openguide for the Buenos Aires city (Argentina). I already have a draft (http://guiaba.mine.nu/cgi-bin/openguides/og), but I have some doubts and I want to share them with you: I'm concerned about language. I hope the guide to be used for locals and visitors, but specially for locals. So, english doesn't seem to be a good option. But: all the other pages in openguides are in english, including Oslo's; and the software doesn't seem to suppor multi-language. I'm not really convinced on using openguides as a platform, since the only features I see which gave me some advantage over other wiki engines are categories and locales (which can be implemented with some hack), and they aren't trated in a special way, it is the same if I put a link at the bottom of the page The rest of metadata doesn't seem to be used except to be shown in the same page (the coordinates system can't be used, since i'm outside the uk). Another important fact is that it is too slow withour mod_perl.. is there any provision for running under it? I don't want to be a flamer, just those are questions that arose when starting this project (which I had in mind before knowing openguides), and may be someone can help me....

The current code uses Geography::NationalGrid and Geography::NationalGrid::GB. You can probably hack OpenGuides::Template.pm to use Geography::NationalGrid::IE without needing to change anything else (probably a useful exercise anyway). What would be nicer would be an install question. Patches welcome :). hth, Ivor.

We're hoping to get OG to work on the OSIE/NI grid, instead of the OSGB grid, and if anyone could give us a head start by maybe giving a break down of the design and what's what it would be much appreciated. As the statistics graphs I just hacked out show, the London site now has an amazing 1,800 nodes on it. So how come we hardly show up on Google? As far as I can tell, it seems to be because our URLs always contain '?', which Google seems to think is shorthand for "don't take this seriously because it's just generated output". The solution, it would seem, would be to have URLs something like "http://example.com/page/Some_Pub". This could be, perhaps, configurable behaviour, which would make the transition from old-style URLs less painful (i.e. not forcing it on the users when they upgrade). The logical next step would be to have a script doing "301 Permanent Redirect"s - much as what you get if you go to Grubstreet's old URL - to the new page name. [OpenGuides-Dev] Customising pipermail archives

Anyone know how to customise the pipermail archives? This may require some root-level editing which I'm happy to assist/approve. I personally have no idea altho' there's a bunch of stuff in /var/lib/mailman/lists/<list-name> but not sure how useful it is. I can't even for example work out WTF the archives.html is meant to be doing - the HTML just looks so wrong (<body><title>...). Yo, venerated and clever people. I want to install OpenGuides, really I do. (And then do some work to make it go with us hicks who live in Northern Ireland. Bonus!) However, make test throws up: Search::InvertedIndex::DB::DB_File_SplitHash::_open_multi_map() - Failed to lock the -map_name '/www/mwk/toaster/open_guides/indexes/' to lock mode 'EX': Search::InvertedIndex::DB::DB_File_SplitHash::lock() - Unable to obtain a 'EX' lock on the map: Resource temporarily unavailable at /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.0/Search/InvertedIndex.pm line 347 yes, I discovered the same thing listed in the mail archives, but not with a big red button that said 'push me to fix'. Plus, I am feeling lazy right now, else I would dig more. That, and supposed to be doing work I get paid for. Can anyone help? Oh, the permissions on the dirs are all world writable until I make a new user yadayada. There is a pint of the old black stuff at YAPC::Europe for the winner. m. oh, should I have said hello, too? I just discovered an interesting project called "Add Your Own": http://www.addyourown.com/ It's a wiki restaurant review system! They even have a rudimentary metadata system for locations and restaurant types. Is it worth us plugging the OG system to them? One interesting thing their site does that ours doesn't is a summary view: http://www.addyourown.com/neighborhood.php?nbh_id=13 I think this is a smart innovation. It would be nice to be able to do that for a given category - see a list of all the nodes, with selected metadata fields, in a tabular format. Maybe this is something I should have a go at, since it's long overdue that I contributed some more code. Ha! Someone's already mentioned us to them!
