Given last night IRCs conversations i was pondering earle's contention that openguides is intimidating. One answer to this is to have two levels of edit page. A simple page and an advanced page. the advanced page would be the same as currently.
The simple page would have the following bits to fill in.
Address: Postcode: Description(content): Where is it? (aka locales): What is it? (aka categories): Summmary: Username: Comment about addition/change (possibly):
This shoudl be enough data for a useful entry. make it obvious that only really decription and node name is vitally important and possibly one of locale or category. Add some ajaxian suggest magic for locale and categories Also so as not to poeple off it might be worth having this form on the new page cgi as well. So they dont have to go through multiple pages to create a page.
We shoudl probably look at ways to autogenerate the map links and geodata. I know soem guides are already doing this.
then we can have what edit page you see as an option. For those of who like to fiddle with all the data. And of course give the users the ability to see the full edit page if they want.
now i just need to rememebr the othe ridea i had last night.

auto adding of nodes to a locale based on first part of its postcode which admiiteldy only makes a lot of sense for london. but im sure it would be helpful eslewhere.
for that matter in london do it based on their telephone number as well.

Hmm, that probably wants some location-specific plugin. But it also requires the postcode database, which an OpenGuide site is unlikely to have access to sadly.
Cheers,
Dominic.

We dont translate it to areas. but if i live in say SW1 it would be nice to find all things in SW1. We can work this all out from properly formatted postcodes. In no way had I intended to do anythign more speical with it than that.

How? Do you know where we can find data telling us that (eg) 0208771xxxx is at such-and-such a grid ref, or in thus-and-so and area?

And isn't this kind of blown away by number portability, where you can take your existing number with you?
What's more, newer VOIP providers can give you a UK number in any area code you like, and you don't even need to be in the UK.

Let's not open that can of worms :-) As it happens, geographic numbers aren't particularly portable in the UK at the moment. OFCOM are consulting on fucking this up^W^W^Wimproving it as we speak.
Hi all,
FWIW, a related comment...
It would be really nice to enable some easier ways of adding pages into the OpenGuides, which currently relies on dedication rather than on a "it's so simple I may as well just do it" effect.
One simple but nice touch would be a bookmarklet that allows someone to easily add a node to the wiki based on the current page they are viewing (scenario: I find the web site of a pub I like, I hit the bookmarklet, I add it to the OG). The URL and a "candidate" node title could be pulled from the current page and used to start populating the wiki form, subject to additional human input. This would lower the barrier to people adding nodes by reducing the amount of cutting and pasting required.
As a first technical pass at the problem, I guess this would involve amalgating the "Create new page" and "Edit page" pages, or passing the URL from the "Create new page" page on to the "Edit.." page, plus a bit of code on the server side to populate the form fields with this stuff. Sure there are other solutions too.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Tom. (getting started on miltonkeynes.openguides.org)
