[copying to Oxford list as the likely venue]
Hello,
I would like to arrange another hackfest. Probably in Oxford, probably
in September or (if necessary) October. All day Saturday and/or Sunday.
I am trying to sort out some hosting at my workplace (well equipped with
conference room space and wireless, and central Oxford location) but
that's not confirmed yet.
So, who would like to come and:
- make a CSS design suitable for shipping with the default OpenGuides
distribution
- implement a global OpenGuides portal
- improve the mobile device support of OpenGuides
- improve the user interface of OpenGuides
- fix/triage a hundred and one little bugs[1]
- meet like-minded people, hack, socialise, maybe even do some Oxford
data collection if you want to get out in the open
and above *make OpenGuides even better*?
If so, either reply to me letting me know which weekends in September or
October you could make, or if you're a fan of these newfangled web
things, visit
http://www.meetomatic.com/respond.php?id=I3MEHE
Let me know if you would bring a laptop with wireless, or would like a
computer to be provided.
Cheers,
Dominic.

Hello,
Apologies to anyone who's only just heard about this - I'd completely
forgotten about this list.
Today users and developers of OpenGuides are invited to come and meet at
the Turf Tavern, Oxford, from noon onwards, to celebrate the 5th
anniversary of the project.

Cheers,
Dominic.

Hello all,
To anyone who joined since there was last any traffic on this list (!)
and anyone else, just thought I'd drop a note to let you know about a
new addition to the Oxford Guide (although it has been there in a
similar form for a while).
Most of you will hopefully be aware that OpenGuides will automatically
produce a Google Maps map of the node, on node pages, if there is
geographical information available, and additionally that you can plot
all the (geo-enabled) nodes on a map at
http://oxford.openguides.org/wiki/?action=index;format=map
This used to just be Google maps, but now the default view is from
http://www.openstreetmap.org/ which has fairly good coverage of Oxford
(thanks to a handful of us who have been surveying over the past two
years).
I'm pleased to be able to offer this as a demonstration of the mapping
data that it's possible to generate with a bit of community effort.
Anyone who's lurking on here, do say hello - it's good to hear from our
contributors!
Cheers,
Dominic.

I love edamame. An oriental restaurant without the grease and a change from the ubiquitous 'noodle-bar' interpretation of japanese cuisine. There's an illustrated review on www.badaude.typepad.com which really captures the atmosphere of the place and shows you all you need to know, including pics of the dishes!
In case there is anyone lurking here who isn't on the dev list and would
be interested:
This weekend we will be having a development/social meetup:
http://dev.openguides.org/wiki/OxfordMeetup2006
everyone is very welcome to come along to whichever bits interest them.
Also, can anyone think of good venues for the Friday and Sunday?:
Friday:
- the impossible: quiet pub, has some food, good beer, centralish/South
Oxford. Or at least some of the above.
Sunday
- Coffee shop with free wireless, wouldn't mind us settling in for the
day as a base for mapping/geeking. Central or somewhere near the
unmapped bits of Oxford.
Dominic.

I've used Joseki to put up a SPARQL interface to querying the Oxford
OpenGuides RDF at
http://surguy.net/joseki/query.html
e.g.
PREFIX dc: <http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/>
PREFIX geo: <http://www.w3.org/2003/01/geo/wgs84_pos#>
SELECT ?title ?lat ?long WHERE {
?place dc:subject 'Pubs' .
?place dc:title ?title .
?place geo:lat ?lat .
?place geo:long ?long
}
to find the latitude and longitude of all the pubs. It will return
XML, formatted text, or JSON.
The data is from a spider of the site that I did today - I've got the
code to keep it up-to-date from Recent Changes, but I haven't hooked
it in yet. I probably will in the next few days.
Cheers
Inigo
Due to the huge amount of spam we've been getting lately as
http://syndicated.livejournal.com/oxguide_edits/ will attest, I've
hacked up a moderation system. All new comments will, until further
notice, not be displayed until approved by me. This is hopefully a
short-term solution - don't worry, this isn't something I intend to be
used long-term and it's something I wish I didn't need to do at all.
The edit page now says:
"Currently all submissions are being moderated so won't appear on the
wiki immediately. Don't panic! However, you may wish to make more
careful use of the preview function."
Cheers,
Dominic.

Please distribute to any UK guide specific mailing lists:
With the recent change to UK pub licensing, our "Opening Hours" data could be very important, especially if we are keeping it up to date, and seen to be keeping it up to date.
I suggest that anyone doing new write ups, or visiting pubs already in the guides, checks what the hours are/will be.
I also suggest adding a small entry to the body content, stating that the hours were checked, with a date.
Could also be potential for a few crawls :).
Ivor.

I've moved the Oxford Guide off Compsoc, as the Compsoc machine is being
retired next week. Handily, the new host, urchin.earth.li, has been
upgraded to a dual 3GHz Xeon recently, so OpenGuides, despite its best
efforts, shoudn't be *too* slow :)
The canonical URL for the Oxford Guide is http://oxford.openguides.org/
The static content is still being served by Compsoc but I expect to move
that soon without trouble. This list will probably move soon too.
Let me know of any problems.
Cheers,
