What do you think about http://london.openguides.org/index.cgi?Designer_Sale_UK ?

I was going to replace the text with "see website" or something like that, and fix the locales/categories but I don't have Flash on here so I can't view the website. Suggest someone who can see Flash does that. The page only needs to exist for another month-ish before we can remove it for being out of date.

I personally have little problem with this. It would be nicer if they had explicitly said "this is an advert", but it is not written to deceive.
Businesses saying what they do is good, it is useful information, and so I think has a place.
I wonder if WikiEtiquette should have a paragraph in giving guidance to what someone in this position should do.

My main problem with it is that I suspect the text is copied directly from their website. I'd prefer there was just a sentence or two saying what they do, and a pointer to the website for more details.
I think long detailed stuff on OGL should be stuff written by customers rather than people directly concerned with the business.
I'm not against businesses mentioning themselves neutrally on the site. We had an instance some time last year (I think) of a pizza place that added themselves to the site and offered discounts to OGL readers. We renamed the page and tweaked the content to fit in with the rest of the site. Marna took up the discount and discovered that the place was indeed very good, so she added her opinion to the page.
But long screeds of press-release-like stuff is not really in fitting with the rest of the site.

I'm guessing that's the text from the mailshot they sent out. Looks like they are regular events, and not just a one off for Xmas so they may come back and update the page. As to where we stand about companies adding stuff about themselves in this manner, hard to say...

I would agree with this, thought how you enforce it is another matter. I would suggest that the guidelines are updated to say items written in style that suggests it has been added by the supplier are subject to being revised or deleted.
The other thing I find a little worrying about this is they have put the item into 4 categories *Categories:* Budget http://london.openguides.org/index.cgi?Category_Budget / Designer http://london.openguides.org/index.cgi?Category_Designer / Fashion http://london.openguides.org/index.cgi?Category_Fashion / Gift http://london.openguides.org/index.cgi?Category_Gift which I assume were created by them. Is there any control over the appropriate creating of categories

Let the wiki way take care of it. Someone will clear the page up at some point. That someone might even be me.

*All* items are subject to being revised or deleted :)

Nonexistent categories are automatically created when a page is committed. They can be deleted by admins (me and Earle) if they prove to be erroneous. For example last night while doing a demo of the site to some friends I auto-created a kebab category that was wrongly pluralised. That will need tidying up.

Oh, look: http://london.openguides.org/?Designer_Sale_UK

I fixed up a similar page: http://london.openguides.org/index.cgi?Chiswick_Honda%2C_W4_5YT
The original version messed up some of the metadata: http://london.openguides.org/index.cgi?id=Chiswick_Honda%2C_W4_5YT&versi...
I don't really have a problem with it. The wording shows pretty clearly who entered the text. The interesting thing is this now opens it up for user comment.
e.g., "These guys are clowns, don't touch them." or similar.
