Smithfield market is the site of the original slaughterhouse for London, when its population and area were much smaller. Cattle were taken to Smith field for slaughtering, to supply the population needs for meat at the time.
Smithfield is one of the last functioning wholesale markets in London, and I think that the feel of the place needs recording. Currently, only one third of the site is being used. There is no need for an abattoir for example.
Apparently, there are plans to relocate the market to north of London somewhere. This will make it easier in terms of transport and logistics. However, what plans are there for the use of the Smithfield site on Charterhouse? It could become a retail market, like Spitalfields. It could be knocked down for redevelopment as office space. Who knows?
There is also at least one pub that opens special hours to cater for the market.
Although it's a grimy building, I still think it's a fascinating piece of architecture. I don't know how much of it members of the public can walk round, but I think a page on Smithfield could make an excellent addition to the London OpenGuide.
